INSTITUT AGRONOMIQUE ET VETERINAIRE HASSAN II
(IAV) Hassan II Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine Institute is the leading education centre in the field of agricultural sciences in Morocco. Established in 1966 (more than 50 years ago) it has allowed more than 15,000 trained people to get a degree in various disciplines like Agronomy, Animal Sciences, Soil Sciences, Agricultural Economics, Veterinary Medicine, Food Science, Topography and Geodesy, etc. IAV Hassan II has a staff of around 200 lecturers (most of them with PH D levels) and a number of 2,000 students. In addition, IAV Hassan II employs some 350 people, in charge with administrative tasks and campuses management. In fact, IAV Hassan II manages two distinct campuses: one located in Rabat (capital city of the Kingdom of Morocco), where agronomy, food science, topography and veterinary medicine are taught, and a second one located in the city of Agadir (600 km South of Rabat), in the heart of the Souss Massa area, a region famous for its horticultural output (fruits and vegetables) and where horticulture and crops’ protection are taught. IAV Hassan II has a long tradition of cooperation with international institutions, as it was supported by several projects in its beginning, with European countries (Belgium, France, Germany, etc.) as well as American countries (USA). IAV Hassan II is nowadays a famous research and training centre, with a well established reputation in the regional sphere (North Africa). It has important ties with agricultural research and training centres in Europe, particularly by its participation to the PRIMA call of the EU. IAV Hassan II has a long tradition of research and training in the field of animal sciences and veterinary medicine. Given the characteristics of the Moroccan agriculture (the vast majority of farms being crop/livestock smallholder units), animal production is a major element of the rural world.
